An Alternative Lifestyle--Living and Traveling
Full-time in a Recreational Vehicle

From Our 1989 Christmas letter

...We thought that you'd like to know what we've been up to in the eight months since we took to the vagabond life. It has been everything that we wanted it to be. When we left Haslett on March 30, it was cold and rainy, and it remained that way for the first three weeks of our new life. Even though the weather kept us confined to our “little” house a lot, we did not get claustrophobia. We even continued to like each other and figured we had it made from then on. We have plenty of room and eventually purchased a few new things like our Toshiba laptop computer and a Panasonic printer.

We took a month to get to Florida, stayed there for three weeks and took 10 days to get back to Michigan (that was too fast for us too). We were having such fun that we really didn't want to come back and get ready to go on our scheduled trip to England. On June
13, we put our “house” in storage and drove to Detroit Metro Airport. At the airport, we took the bikes off the roof of the car, grabbed our panniers (saddle bags), and wheeled our bikes into the airport. About two hours later, we were on our way to London. It was a strange feeling—no luggage and everything we needed for six weeks was in those panniers....

Before leaving Michigan again, we bought 15-½ acres of heavily wooded (hard wood) property in Leelanau County. It is only six miles south of Leland and approximately two miles from Lake Michigan (as the crow flies). Someday, if we ever get tired of this life, we can build a log cabin and settle down. We didn't leave Michigan until the end of August and since then have spent a lot of time in upstate New York, Vermont, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, W. Virginia, Virginia, North and South Carolina and now are in Florida. It has been fun becoming Civil War buffs—touring the major battle fields as we came across them.

We have met wonderful people along the way. Some will become life-time friendships. It is a little difficult continually adjusting to new towns and their grocery stores; but all in all it has been a joy.

I am typing this letter while sitting under a cover of big oak and palm trees in the Ocala National Forest Campground. Enchanting noises made by the tropical birds provide the sounds of a jungle. Ron is preparing to start our campfire and soon will be ready to grill some chicken. Such is our life. And we love it except for one thing. We miss all our friends and family back in Michigan; but on the other hand we have been able to re-acquaint ourselves with family and old friends who live far away.
